Simandou at Scale: Guinea’s Mining Breakthrough Meets a Critical Worker-Safety Risk

Simandou has entered a new era of commercial reality, but its rapid emergence as one of Africa’s largest mining developments is unfolding alongside a serious worker-safety and governance challenge. With more than $20 billion invested, first commercial shipments in December 2025 and Guinea expecting major economic gains, the project is strategically transformative. Yet at least 18 reported worker deaths and three production suspensions following fatal incidents create a material operational-continuity and governance risk that investors, lenders, offtakers and policymakers cannot treat as a peripheral ESG issue.
Simandou has moved from decades of delay and uncertainty into commercial operation. Its first shipment departed Guinea in December 2025, making 2026 the project's first full year of commercial activity.
But the project's greatest intelligence challenge is no longer simply whether Simandou will become commercially successful.
The more consequential question is whether commercial acceleration can be sustained while unresolved worker-safety, governance and operational-continuity risks remain active.
