Egypt's 2026 Trust Profile: Stability Delivered, Prices Contested

A new country assessment from the TRT Intelligence Institute finds Egypt's 2026 trust conditions defined by external and security stability alongside contested household prices. The report scores the country 66.3 out of 100 on its Trust & Transformation Index (TATTI), in the “High exposure” band.

External indicators have strengthened. Net international reserves stood at about $57.2 billion at end-August, remittances reached a record $41.5 billion in 2025, and the IMF completed its seventh Extended Fund Facility review on 30 July, noting fiscal targets were exceeded though inflation convergence has been delayed by about a year.

Household prices tell a different part of the story. Urban inflation stood at 14.5% in August, after a March fuel-price increase of up to 30% following a regional energy shock, and an average 12% household electricity tariff rise on 1 August that followed an earlier assurance rates would hold through the summer. The central bank has held its overnight deposit rate at 19% for five consecutive meetings.

External buffers have only partly recovered from regional disruption: Suez Canal revenue reached $4.67 billion in FY2025/26, up from a $3.8 billion low the previous year but still roughly half of the $9.4 billion recorded in FY2022/23. Separately, interest payments reached about EGP1.5 trillion in the first seven months of FY2025/26, and Transparency International's 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index left Egypt unchanged at 30 out of 100.

“Egypt's institutions have shown they can hit reform targets quickly, and that is recognised by lenders,” said Messan Mawugbe(PhD), Lead Analyst at the TRT Intelligence Institute. “The harder task is making that delivery verifiable to households, particularly where a price assurance has been reversed.”

The assessment concludes that a published administered-price calendar, regular poverty-data releases, and a dated timetable for local council elections would offer a verifiable path toward narrowing the gap between external credibility and household experience.
